The pool typically works like this: Guests are invited to drop off their business cards in a designated box or bowl (the pool) if they want to receive the contact information of other attendees who choose to participate in the pool. The organizer then collects the cards, compiles a list of participants' names along with their companies, titles and contact information, and disseminates this information to everyone who participated in the pool. Participation is usually voluntary, so attendees who do not want their information disseminated can simply opt out by not putting their business card into the pool, though they can exchange business cards directly with other attendees as they please.
