The term is a translation of the original German Halbschwert. Equivalently, the techniques were referred to as mit dem kurzen Schwert "with the shortened sword."

Dabei wurde mit der linken Hand die Klinge etwa bei der Mitte gegriffen, um einen kräftigeren Stoß gegen gepanzerte und ungepanzerte Gegner ausführen zu können. Ein anderer Begriff für das Halbschwert ist das kurze Schwert.
