It dominates the skyline of Independence, Missouri, USA, and has become the focal point of the headquarters of the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ). The temple was built by the Community of Christ in response to a revelation presented to their 1984 World Conference by then church prophet-president Wallace B. Smith. This revelation culminated instructions shared over the course of more than 150 years by prior prophet-presidents recognized by the Community of Christ. The temple was dedicated on 17 April 1994.

Służy jako dom modlitwy i ośrodek edukacyjny „poświęcony sprawie pokoju” (NiP. 156:5). Świątynia góruje nad horyzontem miasta Independence, w stanie Missouri, USA i wchodzi w skład kompleksu światowych władz Kościoła (razem z Audytorium). Świątynia została wzniesiona przez Społeczność Chrystusa w odpowiedzi na objawienie przedstawione delegatom Światowej Konferencji w 1984 r. przez Prezydenta-Proroka Kościoła Wallace B. Smitha. Objawienie to stanowiło wypełnienie proroctw poprzednich Prezydentów Kościoła, w tym samego założyciela Ruchu Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich, Józefa Smitha, Jr. głoszących, że świątynia Syjonu zostanie zbudowana w mieście Independence.
