Located twelve miles northeast of Brenham, it was founded in 1835, and it is the original location of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Some of the features of Independence are: the Texas Baptist Historical Center, the home of Judge Coles, Baylor College Park, Old Independence Cemetery, the Margaret Houston House and Houston-Lea Family Cemetery. President Sam Houston was a well known member of the Independence Baptist Church. President Houston was baptized in Independence in 1854 and his wife, Margaret Moffette Lea, is buried there.
