has glosseng: James Hugh Joseph Tate (10 April 1910 – 27 May 1983) was a U.S. political figure. He served as the mayor of Philadelphia between 1962 and 1972, having reached that office (moving up from president of City Council) when Richardson Dilworth resigned to make his unsuccessful run for Governor. Tate was elected to full terms in 1963 and 1967. He was the first Roman Catholic to serve as mayor of Philadelphia. In Tate's successful re-election bid in 1967, he defeated Arlen Specter, who was District Attorney at the time. Specter later went on to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
