The alphabet was sponsored by the now-defunct Ministry for Posts and Telecommunications.

has gloss	nld: Een fonetisch alfabet is een alfabet dat bedoeld is om de uitspraak van woorden eenduidig vast te leggen. De symbolen van het alfabet corresponderen één-op-één met klanken. Voor het gewone schrift van een natuurlijke taal hoeft dit namelijk niet op te gaan. (In het Nederlands vertegenwoordigen bijvoorbeeld de drie e-s in "december" drie verschillende klanken.) Het kan als zodanig gebruikt worden voor het aanleren van de juiste uitspraak van woorden in een andere taal. Men zet streepjes /.../ of haakjes [...] om een woord heen om aan te duiden dat het fonetisch geschreven is.
