The song is also available as a download on iTunes. It takes its title from the 1651 book about political power, Leviathan, or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil by Thomas Hobbes. The lyric "Brutal, nasty, this life is short" is a paraphrased quote from the book, where Hobbes describes human life in nature prior to the formation of society . The song also references Patty Hearst, the SLA, the Baader-Meinhof Group and the film The Medusa Touch . The song begins with a sample of Richard Jobson, lead singer of the Scottish punk band The Skids declaring "We also do speak politics to you here today" as he introduces the Skids song TV Stars .
