It is illegal for women to take ordination in Thailand. And they are expected to work essentially as maids to ordained monks, rather than receiving training and the opportunity to practice. During the 20th Century, new movements to improve the lot of mae ji but the situation is still far from being acceptable under modern standards of human rights. The Bhikkhuni lineage is being introduced by Venerable Dhammananda, but oppositions from the high-ranking Thai monks seems to have discouraged mae ji from joining her. Sie führen allerdings ein Leben am Rand der Gesellschaft, da sie weder Laiinnen (upasika) noch buddhistische Nonnen (bhikkhuni), oder auch nur Novizinnen (samaneri) sind. Sie genießen zwar weder das Ansehen noch die Privilegien der Mönche, haben aber ebenso wie diese kein Wahlrecht. Die Herkunft des Ausdrucks ist umstritten. Mae Chi halten 8 oder sogar 10 Ordensgelübde, tragen zumeist weiße Ordenskleidung, ihr Haupthaar ist geschoren. Mae Chi leben zumeist in Gemeinschaften, oft auf dem Tempelgelände, aber deutlich abseits der Mönchsgemeinde. Mae Chi sind traditionell in weltlichen wie auch spirituellen Bereichen sehr unzureichend gebildet und erfüllen üblicherweise Hilfsaufgaben und niedrige Dienste im Tempelbereich. |
