Historičari procjenjuju da od bolesti umrla oko trećina stanovnika grada, a među žrtvama je bio i veliki atenski državnik Periklo. Jedan od Atenjana koji je obolio, ali se kasnije oporavio, bio je i Tukidid, koji je u Historiji Peloponeskog rata ostavio detaljan opis bolesti i njenih posljedica na atensko društvo. Atensku kugu dio historičara smatra završetkom tzv. Zlatnog doba Atene, odnosno razlogom zašto je Atena izgubila peloponeski rat i prestala biti dominantnom silom među grčkim polisima.
