Poppy straw and opium both are harvested from the opium poppy. Polish heroin was used mainly in Central and Eastern Europe prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of communist control of the countries of the Warsaw Pact or Eastern Bloc.

Mohnpflanzenteilen in Lösungsmittel und anschließender Acetylierung mittels Essigsäureanhydrid gewonnen wird. Zur Herstellung wird eine in Polen beheimatete Blaumohnsorte verwendet. Der Anbau ist zwischenzeitlich in Polen verboten worden.
