Following German reunification, the SED was renamed the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). |

| has gloss | heb: המערכת הפוליטית בגרמניה המזרחית הייתה רודנית וצנטרליסטית. ב-7 באוקטובר 1949 אושרה החוקה של גרמניה המזרחית, המגדירה אותה כרפובליקה סוציאליסטית ודמוקרטית. כ"רפובליקה סוציאליסטית". רשמית הותרה והתקיימה מערכת בחירות פלורליסטית. בפועל המפלגה היחידה שהותרה הייתה מפלגת האיחוד הסוציאליסטי של גרמניה. מפלגה קומוניסטית זו סינפה אליה מספר תנועות/מפלגות שרצו איתה כרשימה אחת- "החזית הלאומית של גרמניה הדמוקרטית". שירות הביטחון של גרמניה המזרחית, השטאזי פיקח מקרוב כדי לאתר כל פעילות פוליטית שלא קשורה במפלגה השלטת. אנשים שהשתתפו בפעילויות פוליטיות נענשו בחומרה רבה. כל הארגונים במדינה נשלטו והוכוונו על ידי השלטונות. לכנסייה ניתן חופש יחסי כל עוד לא פעלה בתחום הפוליטי. בעקבות איחוד גרמניה, שינתה מפלגת האיחוד הסוציאליסטי את שמה למפלגת הסוציאליזם הדמוקרטי וכיום שמה "מפלגת השמאל" (die Linke). |
