They became known as "Seveners" because they believe that Ismāīl ibn Jaˤfar was the seventh and the last Imām (hereditary leader of the Muslim community in the direct line of ˤAlī ibn Abī Tālib). They believed his son, Muħammad ibn Ismā'īl al-Maktum, would return and bring about an age of justice as al-Mahdi. Their most famous and active branch were the Qarmatians.

Mereka dikenali sebagai "Syiah Imam Bertujuh" kerana mereka percaya bahawa samaada Ismāīl ibn Jaˤfar atau anaknya Muħammad ibn Ismāīl al-Maktum merupakan yang ketujuh dan Imam terakhir (keturunan pemimpin dalam masyarakat Muslim turun-temurun dari Ali bin Abi Thalib). Golongan ini mengutamakan Ali bin Abi Thalib dan keturunannya kerana mendakwa Ahlul Bait yang disebut dalam Surah 33 Ayat 33 al-Quran, merujuk kepada Ali, Fatimah, Hasan dan Hussein.
