In digitaal bemonsterde audio (zogenaamde samples) kunnen twee verschillende typen artefacten voorkomen: artefacten veroorzaakt door een te lage sample frequentie. Er kunnen dan onbedoelde bijgeluiden ontstaan in de audio. toevallige artefacten, bijvoorbeeld ontstaan door een opname-fout of doordat er iets is opgenomen wat niet de bedoeling was (overspraak, verkeerslawaai, een verkeerd gespeelde noot).
