It is home to a portion of the Aboriginal (Anishinaabe) community, the Teme-Augama Anishnabai ("the deep water people"). The island is the largest in Lake Temagami, about 95 kilometers north of North Bay, Ontario. It represents only a small portion of the Anishinaabes Nindakiiminan ("our land"; locally synocped as Ndakiimnan or "ndaki menan"), which includes ten thousand square kilometers of land in the area. The Band Council of Temagami First Nation is Chief Roxanne Ayotte, 2nd Chief John McKenzie, Councellor Arnold Paul, Councellor Jamie Saville, Councellor Marty Pridham and Councellor Steven Laronde. |
