| has gloss | eng: The entity known as The Man in Black (also known as the Monster, the Smoke Monster, Smokey, Jacobs Nemesis, Cerberus and the Security System) is a mysterious inhabitant of the Island that appears to be antagonistic to Jacob. Like Jacob, he appears to have lived on the Island for centuries prior to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. He has claimed to once have been a normal man who experienced betrayal and lost someone he loved, while thus far his chief goals appear to be to bring about Jacobs death through a "loophole" and go "home". While his first chronological appearance was as a middle-aged man dressed in black, he is often seen in the form of what appears to be a cloud of black smoke moving about the Island. The Man in Black has also been known to take on the form of the deceased, and most recently has taken on the appearance of John Locke. |
