has glosseng: Trace fossils, also called ichnofossils (sg. , from ikhnos "trace, track"), are geological records of biological activity. Trace fossils may be impressions made on the substrate by an organism: for example, burrows, borings (bioerosion), footprints and feeding marks, and root cavities. The term in its broadest sense also includes the remains of other organic material produced by an organism - for example coprolites (fossilized droppings) or chemical markers - or sedimentological structures produced by biological means - for example, stromatolites. Trace fossils contrast with body fossils, which are the fossilised remains of parts of organisms' bodies, usually altered by later chemical activity or mineralisation.

Те включват следи, вдлъбнатини, дупки, а понякога към тях се включват и копролити или останки от жизнената дейност на организмите. Фосилните яйца и биоглифите, които са направени от празни черупки или кости влачени през седимента, обикновено не се описват като следи, а също така аглутинираните черупки и дупки в скалата се считат за т.нар. боди фосили. Трейс фосилите, дават уникална перспектива на историята на живота на нашата планета. Те потенциално сигнализират за промяна в активността на организмите и отразяват фауновото разнообразие през времето, като отчасти осветяват тафономичната сянка, която се хвърля от слабо представените във фосилният запис меки части от организмите, по специално в земната и дълбоководната обстановки. Kialakulásukhoz különleges körülmények kellenek, hiszen az élőlény először valamilyen lenyomatot, életnyomot hagy a laza kőzetben, és annak ezt nem sokkal követően meg kell keményedni ahhoz, hogy ne tűnjön el. Végül a megkeményedett, nyomot tartalmazó kőzetet más üledéknek kell befedni, ellenkező esetben az erózió tünteti el a nyomot.
