It was created in 1948, shortly after Indian independence, from the territories of the princely states in the eastern portion of the former Central India Agency. It was named for the Vindhya Range, which runs through the center of the province. The capital of the state was Rewa. It lay between Uttar Pradesh to the north and Madhya Pradesh to the south, and the enclave of Datia, which lay a short distance to the west, was surrounded by the state of Madhya Bharat. has gloss	deu: Vindhya Pradesh war eine Union von Fürstenstaaten in Zentralindien in den Regionen Bundelkhand und Baghelkhand südlich von Benares (Varanasi). Sie entstand am 4. April 1948 durch den Zusammenschluss von 35 Fürsten, die der Central India Agency in Britisch-Indien unterstanden hatten und die sich nun dem neuen Staat Indien anschlossen. Die größten dieser Staaten waren Rewa(h), Orchha, Panna, Bijawar, Chhatarpur, Charkhari, Datia (Duttia), Baraundha, Nagod, Ajaigarh, Samthar und Maihar. Hauptstadt wurde Rewa. Der Maharaja von Rewa wurde zunächst Rajpramukh (Staatsoberhaupt), aber schon 1949 wurde Vindhya Pradesh der Zentralregierung unterstellt. Am 1. Januar 1950 wurden die im Norden liegenden Exklaven (10 Staaten) dem Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh angegliedert.
