Leben Tuchman war die Enkelin von Henry Morgenthau senior. Sie besuchte bis 1933 das Radcliffe College und studierte dann in Yale und an der Columbia University in New York. Nach dem Studium arbeitete Tuchman zunächst als Forschungsassistentin am Institut für pazifische Beziehungen in New York, bevor sie 1936 zur „Nation“, der ältesten Wochenzeitung der USA, wechselte. Diese wurde von ihrem Vater Maurice Wertheim herausgegeben. Tuchman wurde Auslandskorrespondentin und ging bis 1940 nach Madrid, von wo sie über den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg berichtete. Nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs arbeitete sie außerdem noch kurzzeitig als Korrespondentin für den „New Statesman“. 1940 kehrte sie nach New York zurück und heiratete den amerikanischen Internisten Lester Reginald Tuchman. |
