Клетъчната им стена е изградена от кремъчно вещество. В цитоплазмата на клетките се съдържат пектинови вещества и жълтокафяви пигменти,които им придават кафяв или червеникав цвят. Размножават се само безполово чрез делене клетката на две. Иэполэват се в науката эа определяне солеността на водата. Когато потопим водораслото във водата и то загине, това означава, че водата е много солена и не може да има живот в нея.
