Seine elektrische Nutzleistung liegt bei 2,7 kW. Er startete am 12. Juli 2001 zusammen mit dem japanischen Kommunikationssatelliten BSAT 2b an Bord einer Ariane 5G. Die Satelliten wurden in einer elliptischen Umlaufbahn mit zu niedrigem Apogäum ausgesetzt, weil die Oberstufe der Ariane 5G nicht ihre volle Leistung erreichte. Der Apogäumsmotor brachte Artemis lediglich auf eine Kreisbahn in 17.500 km Höhe - statt in 36.000 km Höhe, die für eine geostationäre Position erforderlich ist. Dadurch wäre Artemis wie auch BSAT 2b verloren gewesen. Allerdings gelang es dem Missionsteam mit Hilfe der an Bord befindlichen Ionentriebwerke, die eigentlich nur für kleine Bahnkorrekturen ausgelegt waren, Artemis innerhalb von 18 Monaten auf einer spiralförmigen Aufstiegsbahn zur geplanten geostationären Umlaufbahn hinaufzubringen. Seine endgültige Position erreichte Artemis im März 2003. |
