Er wurde 1983 im Alter von etwa zwei Jahren in der Nähe von Island gefangen genommen und lebt derzeit im SeaWorld von Orlando. Mit 6,89 m Länge und 5,58 Tonnen Gewicht (Stand 2004) ist er einer der größten in Gefangenschaft lebenden Orcas. Tilikum ist durch seine stark nach links gekrümmte Finne leicht von anderen SeaWorld-Orcas zu unterscheiden.
